CorePhysio Launches Concussion Screening and Rehabilitation Program
CorePhysio is proud to announce the first Concussion Screening and Rehabilitation Program in Whatcom County. CorePhysio PT’s provide baseline screening as well as the latest in multi-disciplinary rehabilitation of concussions.
Think that concussions only happen when it results in blacking out? Think again. According to Eric Nauman, expert in central nervous system and musculoskeletal trauma of Purdue University, “The most important implication of the new findings is the suggestion that a concussion is not just the result of a single blow, but it’s really the totality of blows that took place over the season.” Nauman adds, “The one hit that brought on the concussion is arguably the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
This is not common knowledge, even amongst elite athletes. CorePhysio’s own Sarah Butsch PT, DPT, pictured above, played Division 1 Hockey for Princeton University as an undergrad from 2002-2006. Even as the daughter of a physician and playing on one of the nation’s most competitive hockey teams, the cumulative impact of concussions were not common knowledge until she learned about brain injuries during her clinical training years later. “In hockey, getting my bell rung was simply part of the sport. Now years later, I am experiencing musculoskeletal issues resulting from those years of hard play.” Butsch, who is a top-level mountain biker as well as a clinician, still plays hockey. “I’m smarter in how I play. It is possible to play aggressively, though I try to avoid excessive physical contact now.” Butsch brings the combination of her athletic experience as well as her clinical training to her work at CorePhysio. “Being an athlete with my fair share of injuries has helped me relate to clients of all levels who have undergone similar experiences; I can better understand the physical and emotional implications of an injury and the importance of the rehabilitation process in returning to play.”
